There are best practices in every profession, so it is in waste
management. If you follow the professional way, you will get the professional’s
result, but if you do otherwise the result you get will not tally with what the
professionals will come out with. This is the sad case with the Nigerian
scenario.

There seems to be no pattern in the waste management parlance
that we are following religiously. Rather we employ crude ways of doing things
with the hope that things will sort themselves out. What we have on our hands
now give credence to the fact that you cannot eat you cake and still have it!
It is time to get it right if we are to get a clean environment in Nigeria.

As it is, we are far from best practices using the procurement
Act! It is unfortunate that the lowest bidder paradigm does not work out for
best practices. So then what do we do to get it right? We must remove corrupt
practices from the process of engaging those working in the clean up or
sanitation industry! Workers should be paid for the work done! Unlike what
obtains now where it has become a conduit pipe for siphoning public funds in
the name of sanitation.

Our environmental health matters, because life depends on it!
Heaps of wastes here and there dotting our landscape is ‘wealth’ we are told by
those who know the value! Our meeting the millennium development goal number
six (6) can only be possible if patriotic professionals take over this service
with sincere political will to make it happen. What is happening in Rwanda’s
capital city, Kigali is not a miracle but a product of a collective will of the
people driven by a politically willed process! Who says things cannot work in
Nigeria?
