FARMERS’ MULTI-PURPOSE COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES

It is common in developing countries all over the world that the ordinary-man, especially a subsistent farmer, does not find it easy to obtain credit facility from financial institutions in order to enhance his farming activities. The reason for this is that a small-scale farmer does not have the required collateral security for loans.  In more developed countries like America, Britain, Canada, Israel, and India, peasant farmers have been rescued from poverty and financial hardship through the formation of farmers’ cooperative societies. By so doing they are able to establish their own local banks through which they are able to obtain credit facilities from commercial banks to promote their farming businesses.

This book highlights the history and current state of Farmers Multi-purpose Societies in Nigeria as an example. It also features the basic requirements for the formation, management and sustenance of the farmers societies.
