Matthew 6:12, 14-15 KJV
[12] And forgive us our debts, as we
forgive our debtors.
[14] For if ye forgive men their
trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: [15] but if ye forgive
not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Few things have as much power to
transform a person’s life as forgiveness.
Every human being carries a history.
Within that history are moments of joy and moments of pain; victories and
disappointments; friendships and betrayals; kindness received and offences
experienced. Some memories make us smile. Others make us uncomfortable whenever
we remember them.
The challenge is not that painful
things happen. The challenge is what we do with the pain after they happen.
When pain is not processed, it can
become resentment. Resentment can become bitterness. Bitterness can influence
our relationships, decisions, attitudes, and perception of other people.
Forgiveness provides another way.
Forgiveness does not change what happened. It changes the power that what
happened has over us.
A person who forgives is not saying,
“The offence was acceptable.” The person is saying, “I refuse to allow this
offence to control the rest of my life.”
Forgiveness contributes to healing
and personal growth.
You can remember without continually
reliving the pain
Forgiveness is one of the most powerful
expressions of love, courage, and emotional maturity. It is the decision to
release resentment, anger, bitterness, and the desire for revenge after
experiencing an offence or hurt.
